I just bought a 19 250 sxf and we discussed this at 40 hours he checked his valves and compression, then checked it often after that. When those are out of speck, the top end is due. He averaged 60 hours per top end, sometimes more sometimes less.

Posted April 25, 2013. People with 500 exc's are running their top ends with more then 200 hours with only oil changes. Not even bothering does valve checks. Just clean the air filter and change the oil and you'll be fine for at least a 2-3 hundred hours!

I do not think a blanket statement like this works for everyone. But I do agree most people change their oil to often. If you took the above for a 450+ bike- then took time away for conditions (heat, dust) riding style (reving it to the moon or lugging) Did you spent the day slipping the clutch in tight single track, you can extend the interval.

an oil change can be as cheap as $8, if you get the oil on sale and not changing the filter, up to a 100 dollars if a dealer is doing it with the full treatment. What ever motor Im dealing with, I generally monitor closely when its new and establish its own change interval later.
